The Hadith Collections course is an immersive journey into one of the pivotal textual sources in Islamic studies: The Hadiths, narrations, and reports transmitted from Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the rich tapestry of Hadith literature, offering insights into its historical context, cultural significance, and its pivotal role in Islamic jurisprudence and theology. Throughout this course, students will delve into the fascinating history surrounding the recording and transmission of Hadiths, exploring the vibrant culture of learning that flourished around the study of Hadith. We will critically examine the major compilations of Hadith, understanding their profound importance in shaping Islamic thought and their unique role in preserving the collective memory of the Prophet (pbuh) within diverse Muslim cultures. The course unfolds by introducing students to the disciplines intrinsic to the study of Hadith literature. Participants will gain exposure to the diverse categories of Hadith, providing a nuanced understanding of their classifications. A detailed exploration into the standards adopted by major collectors of traditions in their compilations of Hadith will be a focal point of our study. Key topics covered include the fundamental disciplines of Hadith studies, the authoritative role of Hadith as a source in Islamic sciences, the classification of Hadith and its transmitters, and the nuanced definitions of companions (ṣaḥābiyy), followers or successors (tābiʿ), and the followers of the followers (tābiʿ al-tabiʿīn) along with their positions in reporting traditions. We will unravel the technical language and concepts employed in Hadith studies, offering students a solid foundation in navigating this intricate field. An in-depth exploration of the biographies of major compilers of Hadith will shed light on their contributions and methodologies.
