IJC 401 Leadership, Imams and Mosques

This course equips students with essential knowledge, skills, and perspectives for effective Islamic community leadership. Students explore core concepts of Islamic leadership and examine the roles and responsibilities of imams, chaplains, and other Muslim leaders within mosques (masājid), chaplaincy settings, and broader ministry contexts. Through theoretical study, peer-learning, reflective practice, and real-world engagement, students gain a multifaceted understanding of religious leadership, instructional techniques, spiritual care, and community service. Guided by readings and insights from experienced Muslim leaders, the course emphasizes practical wisdom, reflective thinking, and community-responsive leadership. Key topics include reflective practice, Islamic theology and thought, leadership ethics, instructional methods, mosque governance, pastoral care, and navigating contemporary challenges within Muslim communities. Through discussions, case studies, and practical exercises, students develop critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the capacity to cultivate a personal, authentic, and effective leadership style grounded in Islamic principles.
