IAM 205 Media History
This course explores pivotal events in media history, including the evolution of media technology, the dynamics of the media industry, and its profound societal role and influence. Adopting a social history perspective, students investigate the intricate interplay between social, economic, political, and technological factors that have shaped historical communication practices and continue to influence contemporary human interactions. Through critical analysis, students assess the significant impact of media on human experience, including its effects on society, culture, politics, and other dimensions. Additionally, they examine how communication channels have transformed information acquisition, utilization, and sharing. A vital course component involves students engaging in self-reflection to recognize their connections to media history and its relevance to their lives. Key topics include the interactive digital media landscape, the emergence of the digital age, the significance of oral and print culture, the transformative influence of telegraphy and telephony, the power of broadcast media and mass entertainment, and the complexities of the modern multimedia era.
