Capstone Overview

The capstone project gives students the opportunity to pursue independent, high-level research within their area of interest. Students refine a research question, engage with primary and scholarly sources, and produce a thesis that reflects rigorous inquiry, intellectual depth, and specialization-focused learning.

Explore Programs
  • HTP 401 — Research Proposal

Students develop their topic and refine a focused research question, select an appropriate methodology, and prepare a research proposal grounded in relevant scholarship to guide the direction and scope of their thesis.

  • HTP 402 — Thesis Submission

Students complete and submit the full thesis, demonstrating independent thinking, well-supported analysis, and clear, persuasive argumentation through advanced academic research and writing.

  • What Students Will Develop

Through the Capstone Project, students will:

    • refine a focused research question within Islamic Studies

    • work with primary texts and scholarly sources using appropriate academic methods

    • strengthen critical analysis, academic writing, and argumentation

    • develop research planning skills, including outlining, drafting, and revision

    • produce a substantial thesis that demonstrates independent thought and scholarly integrity

    Connected to the Practicum Experience

A clear pathway from practicum to capstone

The Capstone Project is strengthened by the applied learning students gain through ISP 399 Practicum Field Placement, normally completed in the summer between Years 3 and 4 (200 hours over a 12-week term in a local organization). Practicum experiences often help students clarify interests, identify real-world questions, and sharpen their academic focus—creating a strong foundation for fourth-year research and writing.

    Frequently asked questions

Find quick answers to common questions about ISP 399, including eligibility, placement requirements, expectations, and how the practicum connects to your Honours Thesis pathway.

    • When do I complete the Capstone Project?

The Honours Thesis sequence is typically completed during the fourth year of the program.

    • What is the Capstone Project (HTP 401 & HTP 402)?

It is a two-course equivalent Honours Thesis that guides students from a research proposal (HTP 401) to the final thesis submission (HTP 402).

    • Do I get to choose my thesis topic?

Yes. Students select a topic within Islamic Studies, typically aligned with their interests and—where applicable—their specialization. Topics should be researchable and supported by available sources.

    • What is the difference between HTP 401 and HTP 402?

      • HTP 401 focuses on developing your research proposal (topic, question, methodology, and initial sources).
      • HTP 402 focuses on completing and submitting the full thesis based on that approved proposal.
    • How long is the thesis?

Thesis length and formatting requirements may vary by program guidelines. Students will receive the official expectations and submission requirements through the course.

    • How does the Capstone connect to the practicum (ISP 399)?

The ISP 399 practicum provides applied experience that can help students refine their interests, identify meaningful real-world questions, and strengthen the focus of their fourth-year research.

    • Can I transfer capstone/thesis credits from another institution?

No. No transfer credit shall be granted for HTP 401, HTP 402, or ISP 399.
