ARA 301 Arabic Linguistics

Arabic linguistics is a vast field combining the study of the Arabic language with the analytical disciplines that constitute the field of linguistics. In this course, students explore linguistic theories, methods, and concepts used to analyze the structure and processes of the Arabic language. At the same time, students examine Arabic with its millennium-long intellectual traditions, morphology, phonetics, syntax, and semantics, and its current broad diversity of registers that inform linguistic theory. They develop sufficient knowledge in the various schools of thought in Arabic linguistics, both classical and modern, and research methodologies. Students become familiar with the ideas and theories of major linguists who have explored Arabic linguistics. General linguistics course topics include the functions of language, structure and organization of language, the human brain and linguistic abilities, the role of language in the development of individual thought, etc.
