IJC 104 Reading and Memorizing the Qur’an
The course is designed for students eager to develop their Qurʾan memorization and recitation skills. Through a comprehensive and applied approach, students will explore effective techniques of memorizing the Qurʾan and mastering the art of Qurʾanic recitation, known as tajwid. The course strongly emphasizes achieving accurate pronunciation of consonants, mastering the various vowel sounds, understanding the rules of vowelization, articulating the specific points of pronunciation, and comprehending the characteristics and combinations of letters. Additionally, students will study the rules of extension (madd) and stopping (waqf). Students will reinforce their theoretical knowledge and enhance their practical recitation skills through extensive group and individual practice. They will develop a solid understanding of the rules of recitation and gain proficiency in their accurate application. As a result, students will experience a significant improvement in their confidence and ability to recite the Qurʾan properly. The course encourages students to memorize a selection of the sacred text's short Chapters (Surahs), allowing them to internalize and retain key verses from the Qurʾan. By the end of the course, students will have acquired a strong foundation in Qurʾanic memorization and recitation, enabling them to engage with the Qurʾan in a profound and meaningful way.
Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate the ability to accurately pronounce and articulate the consonants and vowels of the Arabic language in Qurʾanic recitation.
Apply the rules of vowelisation, observe the properties of letters and their conjunction in Qurʾanic recitation, and utilize effective techniques for memorizing Qurʾanic verses and chapters.
Display proficiency in properly applying rules of extension (madd) and stopping (waqf) during Qurʾanic recitation.
Recognize and apply the principles of tajwid (the art of Qurʾanic recitation) to enhance the beauty and melodiousness of recitation, and memorize a set number of Qurʾanic Chapters (surahs), as specified in the course curriculum.
Engage in extensive group and individual practice to reinforce theoretical learning, improve recitation skills, and recite selected short Chapters (surahs) from the Qurʾan with accuracy and clarity.
Plan, design, prepare and carry out research activities individually and in collaboration with others on Qurʾanic recitation.
Evaluate and self-assess personal progress in Qurʾanic memorization and recitation, identifying improvement areas and demonstrating increased confidence in reciting the Qurʾan fluently and adequately.
Demonstrate the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships and establish meaningful connections with the College, students, the community, community partners, and professionals from other fields.
